My lazy husband refused to help with the housework – so I went on strike

A mother who nearly left her partner because she was “fed up with him not helping with the housework” went on strike – and says it worked.

Karla Loft, 32, says she has spent most of her 11-year relationship keeping her house tidy, without much help from her partner Carl Scott, 42, a business owner for her the young people.

From cooking, cleaning and dusting to washing, looking after their children and cleaning the bathrooms, Karla claims that most of the housework and childcare fell to her.

The stay-at-home mum from Hastings, Sussex says she often spent the day cleaning after their children and Carl would complain if the house looked messy when he got home. She even joked about wearing a GoPro camera throughout her day so Carl could see how much she was doing.

Karla finally became so “tired and exhausted” and even considered leaving Carl as it was like “talking to a brick wall”.

The mother of two soon reached the end of her relationship and felt she had run out of options to make him change. She was considering leaving her husband just before the family were chosen to appear on Channel 5’s Mum on Strike.

The show has mums leaving home and making their partners fend for themselves for seven days.

Describing the show as a “blessing in disguise”, Karla said her strike allowed Carl to see what it was like to raise children and “not have any support”.

When Karla and Carl’s episode began filming, Karla was worried that he would forget his responsibilities after she stayed in a hotel for seven nights, but since the show, she says their lives have been completely transformed and Carl helps “a lot more “.

“Carl has always been a bit of a lazy person in the family,” Karla said. “He’s so passionate at work but not so much at home and I couldn’t get him to change, but those seven days on the TV show made him walk in my shoes and it made him understand exactly what he needs to do. do at home and how hard it is. It’s gone from me feeling like I didn’t know if I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him to knowing 100 percent that I want to do it.”

Carl said the show “opened my eyes to how much work I have to do in the family.”

Before Carla went on strike, she claimed that Carl would pressure her to keep the house spotless.

She said: β€œIt was very difficult. He was so oblivious to things that needed to be done. None of them seemed to exist. I remember one time we wrote down what we thought needed to be done and I think he had four things on his list and mine was a full page of A4 paper. It was like walking into a brick wall – it didn’t matter what I told him, he was never going to get it and he was never going to change.”

Carl said that after being on the show, he had a “completely different mindset”.

Karla says her husband contributes much more and has even adjusted his calendar so he has more family time.

Carl agreed that it helped the relationship as well.
